Mike Araujo announced his intention to run for the Providence City Council as a Democrat in Ward 13. Providence City Councilmember Bryan Principe, the incumbent, has decided not to run for re-election. Araujo has lived in the ward for 20 years.

“The West End and Federal Hill neighborhoods are at a crossroads. Down one path families will be priced out of neighborhoods they’ve called home for generations. Down the other we can build a community centered on the needs of all the families that live here,” Araujo said. “I’m running for City Council to make sure we take that second road. I will fight for housing stability, for our schools, for access to green spaces. My family has made its home in Ward 13 and I believe in the strength and vitality of the people who live and work here. As a City Councilor, I will fight for the working people of Ward 13.”

“Over the last 30 years or so, I’ve watched my friend, Mike Araujo, grow into an incredible neighbor, ally, activist, advocate, and – most importantly – an amazing parent,” said Susan O’Connell, a lifelong Rhode Islander and longtime resident of Ward 13. “Mike is the person who shows up and stays until the work is done. He’s one of the first people I reach out to when there’s an issue that needs to be addressed. We’ve marched together in opposition to gender oppression and police brutality, in support of workers’ rights, and in celebration of our community’s children. I trust him to listen and follow the lead of our community members; to make our priorities his agenda;” O’Connell continued.

Mike Araujo has been a lifelong activist and labor organizer, playing a pivotal role in campaigns to increase the minimum wage for tipped workers and for all Rhode Island workers, and to stop wage theft. He is a seasoned organizer for rights and justice for all working people and the proud father of Xavier (7) and Ella (5).
