Members of United Nurses and Allied Professionals (UNAP) Local 5098, conducted an informational picketing outside Miriam Hospital on Tuesday, to let people know that workers are still without a contract.

Lifespan executives remains woefully out of touch. They continue to push off and ignore many of the key issues raised by our members and the bargaining team about unsafe staffing levels, high turnover and a fundamental lack of resources. With negotiations resuming tomorrow, we will again raise these important matters of patient safety, along with the economic security of our members, as we work towards winning a fair and competitive contract,” said Frank Sims, RN, UNAP Local 5098 President.

Last week the union voted “no confidence” in Lifespan CEO Timothy Babineau and Rhode Island Hospital President Margaret Van Bree. The union also voted to authorize members of its bargaining team to issue a 10-day strike notice, in the event that negotiations with Lifespan again break down. A second vote by the membership would have to occur before moving forward with a strike and the bargaining team has no immediate plans to issue a strike notice before both sides return to the table on August 8th. UNAP members continue to work under a contract that expired on June 30th.

UNAP represents more than 2,400 nurses, technologists, therapists, mental health workers and health professionals at Rhode Island Hospital and Hasbro Children’s Hospitals.
