“A few minutes ago I called Governor Raimondo to concede the race and pledge my support to her in the General Election,” said former Secretary of State Matt Brown at Fête Music Hall in Providence, where his five-month long progressive run for Governor of Rhode Island came to an end.

Incumbent Governor Gina Raimondo won the Rhode Island Democratic Primary race handily with 57 percent of the vote to Brown’s 33 percent. Spencer Dickinson, the third candidate in the race, caught nine percent of the vote.

Brown was philosophical about his loss, saying, “If it doesn’t work out, the next day you get up and keep doing it, maybe in a different way.”

But Brown was still focused on his core issues: money in politics, education, the environment and the economy. “Many in this state struggle to get by, because the system isn’t working for them… This is what we need to change…”

Brown then left the podium. But returned second later, after seeing the press gathered there to cover his campaign, including Channel 12’s Kim Kalunian and a reporter from Think Progress.

“What the free press does is critical for this state and this country,” said Brown. “And I thank them for their coverage. I thank them for their dedication. It is not easy, what they do. And it is essential in a Democracy.”
