Invenergy‘s proposed $1 billion fracked gas and diesel oil burning power plant aimed at the pristine forests of northwest Rhode Island is not dead yet. Today the company issued a stipulation asking the Energy Facilities Siting Board (EFSB) to to grant a stay in the proceedings, essentially hitting the pause button for up to two months. This stay is to be in effect pending a decision from the Federal Energy Regulatory Commission (FERC) on ISO New England‘s request to terminate the company’s Capacity Supply Obligation (CSO).

“After the regional grid operator cancelled a key agreement with Invenergy last week, this looks to be yet another major setback for the proposed fossil fuel plant,” writes Conservation Law Foundation (CLF). With 32 out of 39 communities passing resolutions opposing the plant, Rhode Islanders clearly oppose the increased greenhouse gas emissions that the diesel and fracked gas power plant would generate. CLF believes it is time for Invenergy to admit defeat and for Rhode Island to focus instead on promoting clean energy sources like wind and solar power.”

The EFSB considers this issue tomorrow, Wednesday September 25, 2018 at 10am, 89 Jefferson Blvd, Warwick, RI 02888.
