About two dozen people representing environmental groups opposed to building more fossil fuel infrastructure in Rhode Island demonstrated outside Governor Gina Raimondo‘s fundraiser at The Dorrance in downtown Providence. The protesters, representing No LNG in PVD, The FANG Collective and Burrillville BASE, called on the Governor to oppose National Grid‘s proposed LNG liquefaction facility in the Port of Providence and Invenergy‘s proposed power plant in Burrillville.

“For over three years community members have been urging the Governor to oppose the fossil fuel power plant proposed for Burrillville and the liquefied natural gas (LNG) facility proposed for Providence,” wrote organizers. “With key permitting decisions coming up for both projects, community groups are escalating pressure on the Governor to speak out against these widely unpopular fossil fuel proposals.”

The three groups co-signed a letter to the governor, which was hand delivered to the Governor during a “Yes on 3” event on Friday.

The protest lasted about two hours. A different group staged a different protest of the governor at the same time and in the same location, initially causing some confusion.
