On September 21, activists are rallying at the Rhode Island State House in solidarity with national marches happening across the country. Led by a national march in Washington DC, We the People March has taken off across the country as a call-to-action for our communities to take a stand and remind our elected officials that they work for us. We are coming together as a collective people to talk about the issues we face as a country and start the path towards change. We the People know that doing nothing will solve nothing and that silence and inaction are complicity. Providence will be holding one of many solidarity rallies on the same day of the march in Washington DC.

The We the People March is organized by activists and author Amy Siskind, president of The New Agenda, and Karen McRae, interim and first female CEO of CBMOA. For months, Siskind and McRae watched as many called for marches, and when no one else picked up the ball, one month ago decided enough is enough.

The march in DC currently has over eleven thousand people interested, taking off soon after it was announced. The organizers encouraged cities to hold their own solidarity marches for those who were unable to make the trip to DC. Currently there are over 50 solidarity marches throughout the United States and a few overseas as well. Providence was the first city to announce a solidarity march. There is transportation available for those interested in attending the march in DC. The information for the solidarity marches and transportation can be found on the website, here.

Siskind and McRae have chosen not to accept corporate contributions or affiliation beyond this being a purely grassroots efforts and have spread the word on social media and utilized circles and networks of Americans who care about issues such as gun control, kids in cages, the environment, corruption, kleptocracy and more.

“So many of us worked for two years ahead of midterms, to take a majority and put a check in place and finally have accountability,” said Amy Siskind. “That hasn’t happened. So many Americans are concerned with losing our democracy and values. We are marching to be seen and heard, and to remind our elected officials that they work for us!”

This event will be complete with speakers and organizations tabling with information for further involvement in our community. The State House Lawn has often been home for these types of rallies and marches, so this will be no different. Rhode Islanders fight hard for what we believe in. We The People will be seen and heard.

The organizer is still looking for volunteers to help coordinate the day of the rally, and for progressive Rhode Island organizations to be a part of the event by tabling and co-sponsoring. If interested, please email Lauren at [email protected]. Any questions can be directed there as well.
