Jewish groups and community allies call for immediate action to end collaboration with ICE

Members of Never Again Action and AMOR (Alliance to Mobilize Our Resistance) will hold a demonstration at Friday night’s public meeting of the Central Falls Detention Facility Corporation board of directors, which oversees the Wyatt Detention Facility.

The board’s agenda includes discussion of an updated forbearance agreement with the Wyatt’s bondholders that would solidify and expand the Wyatt’s contract with Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) to serve as a detention facility for migrants. It would also set into motion steps to swiftly sell and privatize the prison, removing what little public oversight currently exists.

We cannot stand idly by and allow unaccountable, out-of-state bondholders to profit off of the inhumane treatment of detainees in Rhode Island. Never Again Action calls on Governor Gina Raimondo and other elected officials to commit today to passing legislation that would ban private prisons from operating in our state.

We also call on the four members of the Central Falls Detention Facility Corporation board of directors to fulfill their obligation to the communities they represent by either voting against any agreement that includes continued collaboration with ICE or resigning from their positions immediately.

The meeting, originally planned for Monday, was rescheduled to Friday evening, when the Jewish community observes Shabbat, the day of rest. Whether or not this was a calculated attempt to suppress turnout, Never Again Action will not be deterred from making sure our voices are heard in support of our immigrant neighbors.

Never Again Action is committed to preventing business as usual at the Wyatt, because when we say “never again,” we mean it.
