Exposed: Musk’s DOGE Caught in Web of Lies About Government Waste

Elon Musk’s Department of Government Efficiency has repeatedly made false claims about government waste while pushing an agenda to dismantle federal services. But a closer examination reveals a pattern of deception, with DOGE’s own data showing dramatically inflated figures and baseless accusations.

Rhode Island News: Exposed: Musk’s DOGE Caught in Web of Lies About Government Waste

When Elon Musk acknowledged at the White House “some of the things that I say will be incorrect” and dismissed accuracy concerns with “nobody’s going to bat 1.000,” he inadvertently revealed a troubling truth about the Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE). The organization’s pattern of false claims and inflated figures suggests not mere mistakes, but a systematic campaign of misinformation.

A Billion Here, A Million There: DOGE’s Mathematical Sleight of Hand

The contrast between DOGE’s claims and reality became starkly apparent when examining its purported savings from a canceled Immigration and Customs Enforcement contract. Initially touted as an $8 billion cost reduction, the actual contract value was just $8 million. Even that figure proved inflated – records show the maximum potential savings was under $5.5 million.

This pattern of dramatically overstated figures repeats across multiple agencies and programs. DOGE’s public claims require constant revision when confronted with actual data, yet these corrections receive far less attention than the initial sensational allegations.

The Social Security Deception

Musk’s recent claims about Social Security fraud exemplify DOGE’s approach to manufacturing crisis. His posts on X suggested millions of people over 110 years old were fraudulently receiving benefits. The Social Security Administration had to step in to correct the record, confirming that none of these individuals were receiving payments. The correct data can be found here.

The Inspector General’s office data shows improper payments represent less than 1% of total disbursements between 2015 and 2023. This stands in stark contrast to White House Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt’s unsubstantiated claim of “tens of millions of people” receiving fraudulent payments.

FEMA and the Migrant Housing Controversy

DOGE’s misrepresentation of FEMA’s migrant housing assistance provides another clear example of deliberate distortion. Musk claimed FEMA spent $59 million on “luxury hotels” for migrants in New York City as “disaster relief.” The reality? The funds came from a separate Congressional allocation through the Shelter and Services Program, with only $19 million spent on (non-luxury) hotel accommodations – part of a larger $237 million reimbursement for New York’s $7 billion migrant housing expenses.

The USAID Misinformation Campaign

DOGE’s attacks on USAID reveal a particular pattern of baselessly alleging corruption and waste:

  • False claims about $50 million spent on condoms in Gaza
  • Unsupported allegations about millions in payments to celebrities for Ukraine visits
  • Debunked assertions about funding a “transgender opera” and “DEI musical”
  • Manufactured controversy over routine subscription payments to media organizations

Each claim collapsed under scrutiny, yet DOGE continues to make new allegations without evidence. This despite the fact that low hanging fruit – documented evidence that USAID acts as a CIA front that seeks to overthrow leftwing foreign governments and propagandize via grant money – has been kept out of the public eye.

The Media Payment Myth

DOGE’s campaign extended to falsely claiming government funding of major media outlets. When Politico experienced a technical payroll issue, conspiracy theories emerged about USAID funding. The reality? Government agencies simply purchased standard subscriptions to Politico Pro, their professional news service, at standard commercial rates. Whether or not they needed to do so is a different question, but the framing of funding Politico for political purposes was categorically false.

Similar false claims targeted The New York Times, Reuters, and the Associated Press. While USAID does support some international media development programs, particularly in regions with limited press freedom, and Americans have the right to question how this money influences coverage, the alleged payments to major U.S. news organizations proved fictitious.

Celebrity Visit Fabrications

DOGE’s credibility suffered another blow when it promoted false claims about USAID paying celebrities to visit Ukraine. Ben Stiller publicly declared these allegations “totally false” and “untrue,” confirming he self-funded his trip. Sean Penn’s attorney described the claims as “completely false” and threatened legal action over the defamatory statements.

The Fort Knox Fantasy

Even U.S. gold reserves became targets for DOGE’s speculation. Musk questioned whether Fort Knox’s gold reserves – valued at approximately $435 billion – were “still there” or “gone,” suggesting a need for a “live video walkthrough.” This claim persisted despite former Kentucky Governor Matt Bevin’s previous confirmation that the facility remains “freakishly well secured.”

The Pattern: Post First, Correct Later (Maybe)

DOGE’s operational strategy has become clear:

  1. Make dramatic claims about government waste or fraud
  2. Allow these claims to spread rapidly on social media
  3. Ignore or downplay subsequent corrections
  4. Move on to new allegations before previous ones are fully debunked

Posts critical of DOGE on Musk’s social media platform, X, are being hidden and removed using an array of trick. Here, comments critical of DOGE, shown on the left, are only visible when linked to directly. When viewing the original post, these comments suddenly show as “unavailable”.

The Real Cost of False Efficiency

While DOGE claims to pursue government efficiency, its actions suggest a different agenda. The organization has:

  • Terminated contracts based on keyword matches without understanding their purpose
  • Fired federal employees without evaluating their actual job functions
  • Made billions in erroneous claims about potential savings
  • Failed to provide evidence for any significant fraud or waste

Locally, here in Rhode Island we spoke to several military veterans still working for DoD whose roles were changed to work from home during COVID and remained this way, so that the government could remove expensive building leases from its budget while still getting the work done. Inexplicably, these veterans were recently told to “return to the office immediately” despite the fact that their office no longer exists because the military no longer leases the buildings.

The Impact on Government Services

The consequences of DOGE’s campaign extend beyond misleading statistics. Critical government functions face disruption while DOGE pursues its agenda of dismantling federal agencies and programs. The attempted closure of the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau stands as a prime example of action without explanation or justified cause.

Following the Money Trail

DOGE’s repeated exaggerations of government waste appear designed to create public support for privatizing government functions. Yet the initiative has failed to produce evidence of the massive fraud and waste it claims to target.

The organization’s claims about government spending continue to fall apart under scrutiny:

  • Chelsea Clinton did not receive $84 million from USAID
  • USAID did not fund research that caused COVID-19

The Impact on Elon Musk

While Musk is often seen celebrating DOGE’s fictionalized achievements on his social media platform, behind the scenes his antics have taken a massive toll on his companies. Investor’s are upset with both Musk’s ability to operate his business while assisting the government and his public conduct which has seriously harmed Tesla’s reputation. Tesla stock began dropping at almost the exact moment he became part of the Trump Administration is now off 20% of its market value since.

The Future of Public Service

As DOGE continues its campaign of misinformation, the real threat to government efficiency may be the organization itself. Its pattern of false claims and baseless allegations undermines public trust while failing to deliver promised improvements or savings.

The initiative’s impact extends beyond statistics and budgets – it affects millions of Americans who depend on government services. While Musk and DOGE generate headlines with sensational claims, the systematic dismantling of government capabilities continues without meaningful oversight or accountability.

The efficiency DOGE claims to seek appears increasingly secondary to its role in creating justification for privatizing government functions. As each new claim proves false or exaggerated, the question remains: how much damage will be done to critical government services before DOGE’s pattern of deception is fully recognized?
