A group of social justice activists gathered outside the law office of Martin Harris this morning to hold a vigil for Lilian Calderon, the woman who was seized by United States Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) during a routine meeting in Johnston.

From the vigil notice:

Luis Gordillo

“On January 15, 2018 while getting her marriage verified to begin the citizenship process, Ms Calderon was detained by ICE in Johnston, Rhode Island. A mother of two United States citizens (a 21 month old boy and a 4 year old girl) who came to the United States from Guatemala when she was 3 years old, Ms Calderon is currently being held far from her family in the Suffolk Community Corrections Center in Boston. We will be gathering and sending off Luis Gordillo, Lilian Calderon’s husband, and Lilian’s lawyer as they head to MA to file paperwork to reopen Lilian’s case.”

While activists held signs outside in the snowy downtown Providence, Catarina Lorenzo of Alliance to Mobilize Our Resistance (AMOR), Lilian’s husband Luis Gordillo, and Reverend David Helfer from the Unitarian Universalist Congregation of South County made statements inside.

Luis Gordillo fought tears while talking about his wife and the fear that she is experiencing. Lilian’s cell mate was deported by ICE last night.

ICE responded to the ProJo:

AMOR has a petition in support of Lilian Calderon.

And here’s a fundraiser for her legal defense costs:
