“I want to thank the voters of Bristol and Warren for believing in our campaign and for choosing me to be your new State Representative,” said June Speakman in a statement. “I also want to thank all the volunteers who gave so much of their time to talk with voters about our values and our vision for this district and for Rhode Island.”

Speakman won a special election for House District 68. She beat incumbent Representative Kenneth Marshall, a former Democrat running as an independent, Libertarian William Hunt, and Independent James McCanna Jr.

Unofficial tallies

“We began this campaign knowing that the values that Bristol and Warren voters care about need to be upheld,” said Speakman. “We deserve a government that is transparent and accountable to the people it serves. We know that we need to do more to address climate change and preserve the shoreline and waterways that make our communities special. We believe that all working families deserve to live in a safe and affordable home. We must prioritize our children’s futures by fighting for more funding for our schools. We want to ensure that our senior citizens are able to age in place with dignity. And we want to protect women’s reproductive rights — no matter what happens at the federal level.”

Speakman might not get a chance to vote on reproductive rights in the near term as it is expected that the House will take up the Reproductive Privacy Act, which would codify Roe v Wade into state law, on Thursday, and Speakman is expected to be sworn in next Tuesday.

“The voters have spoken and have shown that every voice and every vote matter. I will work hard to make a difference and am eager to get to work for our community,” said Representative-Elect June Speakman (Democrat, District 68, Bristol, Warren).
