“Aaron has been a champion for our communities,” said Providence Mayor Jorge Elorza at the Parkview Bakery Cafe on the south side of Providence Monday morning. “We have worked together for stronger schools, better jobs and a safer environment, and I’ve seen that he has the new energy and new ideas we need. I am proud to support Aaron’s campaign because he will fight each day to make sure our communities here in Providence, and across Rhode Island, are heard in the State House.

“With Rhode Island ranked last in the nation regarding the obstacles to success faced by Latino students, it is particularly important that we have state leaders committed to fighting for our young people. Aaron has been a leader in supporting our efforts to win more critical funding for English Language Learners, and I know he will keep fighting for our community’s youth.”

Rhode Island State Representative Aaron Regunberg (Democrat, District 4, Providence) accepted the endorsement of Elorza for his run for Lieutenant Governor.

“I am humbled and so proud to accept the endorsement of my Mayor and my friend, Jorge Elorza,” Regunberg said. “Mayor Elorza has been a champion in standing up to protect our neighbors and communities from the attacks coming out of the Trump administration, and pushing to ensure city government does more to serve residents. I look forward to working with Mayor Elorza as Lieutenant Governor to take those fights to the state level. Together, we can protect our immigrant communities, we can fight for a living wage for working families, we can take action to end gun violence, and we can make state government more accountable to every Rhode Islander, not just those who can afford a well-connected State House lobbyist.”

Elected officials attending the endorsement included Senator Harold Metts (Democrat, District 6, Providence), Representative Shelby Maldonado (Democrat, District 56, Central Falls) and Providence City Council Members Nirva LaFortune (Ward 3), Seth Yurdin (Ward 1) and Samuel Zurier (Ward 2).

Regunberg has already received the support of the Sierra Club, Rhode Island Working Families Party, the Amalgamated Transit Union (ATU) Local 618, SEIU Local 1199, United Nurses & Allied Professionals (UNAP), the International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers (IBEW) Local 2323, Teamsters Local 251, among others.

Lawyer Jose Batista emceed the event.
